Lake Titticaca, 4,000-Meter Hot Springs, Ladies With Cool Bowler Hats And Baby Alpacas

I Loved The Outfits The Women Wore...

...But Even Better Were Their Little Bowler Caps

Bolivia, from the southern region where lakes hover at the 13,000-foot mark, to the capital city of La Paz, with colorful women selling fruit on the streets, I really loved this country. The Most Dangerous Road and Amazon trip (mentioned earlier) were also here, as well as a romantic night's stay with Caro on Isla del Sol in the middle of Lake Titticaca. No nighttime electricity meant an Italian -- of all things -- dinner by candlelight. And we also had the chance to visit the World's Highest Zoo ... at around 3,900-meters, it had an amazing array of animals. Oh, and Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) provided us with a canyon-like maze that looked like we were descending into hell itself. Did I say this before? What a country.

The Cattle Decide To Get Home...

...Before The Luna Overtakes The Sol

The Inca people believe that it was on this island that the sun was originally created for our viewing pleasure. And the name Titicaca has made many a five-year old, and some much older than that, snicker once or twice. We walked from one side of the island to the other, stopping to play with the children and watching a seventy-year old woman lug firewood on her back, held only by a colorful cloth. It was an all-day affair, as we got lost several times and were not able to get a boat ride back to our neck of the woods. Oh, well, sometimes you work for memories.

The Main Police Station Riddled With Bullets...

...As La Paz Had An All-Out Riot We Just Missed

It is not often you get to see the scene of a recent riot, but looking at the main police station with bullet holes everywhere, and even some casings still in the street, I knew the rebels were not afraid of anybody. Sadly, this stopped us from being able to take a prisoner-run tour of the jail, as recommended by the Planet. Caro did talk through the front gate to a Swiss boy, there on drug possession. His blond hair and lanky build made him stand out from a mile away. I could not imagine.

Hot Springs In The Middle...

...Of The Cold Morning Air

It is such a great feeling to be in cold weather and then be able to either sidle up to an active geyser or to sprawl out in the middle of a well-placed hot spring -- thanks, God!  Both of these location were well over 4,000-meters and the geysers were actually over the 5,000-meter mark.  In feet for my bretheren back in the States, I am talking between 15,000 and 17,000 feet above sea level.  In other words, it was mad high.  But still over 13,000 feet lower than the peak of Everest, for perspective's sake:)

...When You Are Asked To Share Your Bed With A Chicken

Caro and I did not know a threesome was going to be in order when we took a beautiful room in Copacabana overlooking the islands on Lake Titticaca.  This little guy seemed to realize that this was his home way before we took the bus into town and it would be his well after we moved up to Peru (as long as nobody in the house got hungry for chicken, that is).  I, for one, did not want top be the one to tell him this piece of impending doom, so we let huim stay (or, more appropriately he let us have some of his space).
